Gay rights activist Pedro Julio Serrano demanded that the government not parole a convicted serial killer Ángel Colón Maldonado, dubbed Ángel de los Solteros, who targeted homosexual men in a string of killings in the 1980s.
Colón Maldonado was sentenced to over 300 years in prison in 1987 for the murders of Luis Manuel González López, a dentist; renowned model and social-life writer Iván Frontera; and Cuban musician Gabriel Faxas de Miguel.
Colón Maldonado, who committed the crimes as a teenager, later confessed to having committed at least six murders. Of all the murders, Frontera’s killing was the most notorious because he was tied up and stabbed over 100 times.
“It is inconceivable that the release of one of the most despicable murderers in our history is even being considered,” Serrano asserted. “Even when the hearing on his case is held on May 31 by the Parole Board, Ángel Colón Maldonado must remain in prison. Getting him out of jail would send a wrong and dangerous message that the lives of LGBTQ+ people are worthless. Getting him out of jail would be a criminal act.”
The Puerto Rico Para Todes spokesman said that in a letter he wrote a few years ago, Colón Maldonado acknowledged having murdered seven gay men. Furthermore, he indicated that he was tried in court, but that he believed his murders were justified by his fundamentalist religious belief.
“Given the state of emergency due to gender violence and hate crimes that we are experiencing, we cannot, under any circumstances, allow this serial killer to be on the streets,” Serrano said. “If the government agrees to this request, we will not have learned anything from the terrible release of Hermes Ávila from prison that allowed him to murder Ivette Joan Meléndez Vega. This has to stop now.”
The Parole Board acknowledged that Colón Maldonado is on a list of prison inmates who would be evaluated for parole eligibility, but provided no additional comments.
